Derek Webb

Ever since I read an article about him in Relevent, I have been very interested in Derek Webb. He seems like a guy after my own heart - believes in small government, helping Africa, and being real.

Last week, I got an email that he is giving away his new album Mockingbird free to download. Seriously. It reminded me of Keith Green giving away cassettes back in the 80s. Someone mocked Keith Green asking if he was going to give away tape players too. He said he would if it was needed.

So I download the album (you can too - the link is in the title of this post). The content of the cd reminds me of Keith Green too - challenging conventional church wisdom and calling for radical obedience to the gospel. Here are some of the provacative lines:

"How can I kill the one I'm supposed to love?"

"Don't teach me about moderation and liberty. Just give me a shot of grape juice."

"There are two great lies that I’ve heard: 'The day you eat of the fruit of that tree, you will not surely die' and that Jesus Christ was a white, middle-class Republican and if you wanna be saved you have to learn to be like Him."

Download it. Digest it. And let's discuss it.

Same thing here PR. When I first saw freederekwebb.com (my birthday woot), I thought, "It's just like Keith Green!" Derek Webb has been to BBC 2 or 3 times, and some people think he is too preachy for a musician.

Another thing I discovered but have not listened to: Derek Webb has several podcast interviews / discussions on iTunes.

Hello,
Great blog. I am a young musician who has been heavily influenced by Keith Green, and I would be honored if you would check out my music. All my music is free on my site. Anyway, just thought that I'd share.

Thanks,
-Sean

Hey there, my name is David McCollum with Dryve Artist Management and we work with Derek Webb. You recently posted a great comment about Derek on your blog and we were wandering if you would be willing to let us use it for section we are adding to the Freederekwebb.com site to encourage more folks to not be scared of the promotion?

Let me know if you are ok with this and how you would like to be credited.

Thanks so much and hope you are well and would you mind emailing me directly at dmccollum@dryve.us?
