Here is a fantastic article by Scot McKnight about the emerging church. He argues that there are five common threads within the emerging church movement. It is ... prophetic, postmodern, praxis-oriented, post-evangelical, and political. I think he hits the nail on the head.

Dude, that is a fantastic article, perhaps one of the best at honestly characterizing what emerging is or isn't. I liked his distinction of emerging and emergent. I also find myself in the category of ministering "with" postmoderns. I for sure don't want to just minister to them, and I don't think I'm quite there in the ministering "as" one. Lastly, the thing I think we strive to do different than many other emerging, postmodern churches, is our emphasis on evangelism. The gospel is central, and it always should be. Great read.
I minister as a postmodern. I am the postmodern with whom you minister.
I got to be in a small group with Scot in December - we were discussing his book - The Real Mary. Fascinating. He is a very articulate and intelligent man.
I agree, his article on the emerging church is dead on.
