Larry Norman, RIP

Pioneer of Christian music, Larry Norman, has died. He wrote classics like Wish We'd All Been Ready, Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music, and He's an Unidentified Flying Object. He was an odd duck. But he certainly shaped the American evangelical ghetto.

I'll never forget the first time I heard him, on a cassette tape, in our dorm room, coming from your boom box. I wasn't sure about him, or you, at the time. But you both grew on me, one exceedingly more than the other.

Where would we really be without "I Wish We'd All Been Ready"?

This is very dear to my heart. When I was a teenager, very full of confidence, my brother-in-law introduced me to Larry Norman, I then sang Why Should the Devil have all the Good Music, to open for a band and became an avid fan of his music. He was a true inspiration.

Larry Norman sounds like a vast improvement over Carman. Nothing against Carman, but my youth group played him WAAAYY too much--they practically drove me to listen to Metallica because that was the only thing that could drown out Carman from the church van speakers (I find I can only listen to a series of songs 10 times in a row before I really start to hate an album).

Hah! On a peripherally related note, if you ever want to have some entertainment at my expense or run me off for a bit, play Michael W. Smith's "Friends" song and just see how quick I find pressing business elsewhere. There's nothing necessarily innately wrong with the song, it's that I heard it and sang it only about 150 times at church camp one year. It burns, it burns...

*shudder* just the memory of it gives me the shivers, it does.
