Republicans Puzzle Me

Rick Santorum and Chris Shays are both questioning Tom DeLay's leadership of the Republicans in the House. The controversy surrounding DeLay right now is a media-created crisis. And the last things Republicans should do is allow the Democrat-aiding media to set the agenda for them.

Republicans have this tendency to shoot their leaders. Take the adultery controversies of the 90s. Democrats rallied around Bill Clinton. What did Republicans do - serve both Newt Gingrich and Bob Livingston up on silver platters. Politics is a blood sport, and sometimes Republicans aren't very good at it.

The Trent Lott - racism controversy is another example. Democrats would never do to one of their leaders what Republicans did to Lott.

Santorum did give credit to DeLay and patted him on the back on This Week on ABC on Sunday by calling him a 'very effective leader,' but that he needed to 'lay out what he did and why he did it.' I can't disagree with Santorum. If it is true it isn't anything to sneeze at. I trust that DeLay can lay out his case without worry unlike Lott though.
