It was certainly kind of ironic and would have been more so if they had shown her a world map, and seen if she could actually pick out the U.S herself.
I was sort of impressed with her mastery of doublespeak, though: she should perhaps consider a career in politics.
Dude, we were cracking up at my office this afternoon to it. Tough break for her, but seriously, shouldn't this candidate have been filtered out by the state pageant before getting this far?
It's certainly not Kolyma Tales depressing ("if the white bread is so insubstantial, maybe the crude oil is actually edible! Dig in, comrades!"); although, it might be Zoshchenko depressing (the one who wrote funny, "unserious" satire pointing out the imperfections in the supposedly perfect People's State under the censors' noses for 25 years before being exiled). ;-)
People like her are funny, I guess, but they are also depressing, sad (I mean you got to feel kind bad for her--all the stuff she's missing out on all the time), and a tiny bit disturbing (she gets to vote and she gets to drive). Another sad thing is that she is sterotyped: she might not actually be quite that dumb (just got a bit rattled, perhaps), but people are going to assume that she is (especially now).

As for being filtered out by the state pageant, well, pageants aren't really known for having stringent cognitive requirements. I'm sure in the...cough, ahem..."qualifications" that pageants are known to require and assess, she is more than amply endowed.
Her answer really was a good example of doublespeak (I doubt Nixon himself could have done much better), and I really do suspect that she could have a future at some level of politics if she practices and gets the right coaches (I have personally seen politicians who were more polished and better coached who weren't really much brighter--woe to the Republic).

That is really sad. Is it okay to laugh sure. However, if I was that girl I would feel bad that A.C. Slater was about to crack up at my answer.
